Heat Exchanger Sizing Calculator

What this tool does

Provides a first-pass sizing view for exchanger duty, area, and thermal approach so teams can screen cooling and heating requirements quickly.

When to use it

Use it for concept work, utility framing, and early equipment discussions. Do not use it as a substitute for detailed thermal design, fouling review, or vendor-rated exchanger selection.

Key assumptions

  • The calculator uses a simplified counter-flow basis suitable for screening-grade comparisons.
  • Inputs assume representative fluid properties rather than a full temperature-dependent property package.
  • Calculated area and duty should be treated as directional until process conditions, margins, and fouling factors are fixed.
  • Default values are for fast early-stage use and should be replaced before any detailed procurement or FEED issue work.
Counter-flow heat exchanger logic is assumed. Cold-side outlet temperature is set by energy balance, while the target approach temperature constrains the cold-end basis. Default U values are screening assumptions only: H2/H2 150 W/m²K, H2/water 500 W/m²K, H2/air 50 W/m²K.
